
Khol Barana
Khol Barana is the actual Marwari engagement ceremony. This is where the families are involved and this arrangement serves as a formal introduction and public announcing the newly engaged couple.
Bathse
This is where all the family members that the bride and groom's families wish to include in the auspicious event are invited. In some cases, the mothers of the future bride and groom will visit family and friends around town, spreading the word with invitations and sweets.
Mayara
This ceremony is a gift bearing occasion where the bride's uncles, brothers and close family members exchange gifts rejoicing the event. The groom's family reciprocates in the same manner.
Bana Betai
Also known as the 'Pithi Dastoor', this ritual takes place a few days prior to the wedding. This involves preparing the bride and groom (in their respective homes) for the actual matrimonial ceremony. Paste made from oils, curds, sandalwood and turmeric is applied to the faces, arms and feet of the bride and the groom.
Mehndi
This ceremony is where the bride and groom, separately, get henna put on their hands and feet. Decorative and elaborate patterns are made by either professionals or family members. This is also an opportunity for others to have henna applied. Traditionally, the name of the groom is worked into the mehndhi pattern of the bride.
Sangeet
Literally meaning song and music, this function is to celebrate the start of a new life for the to-be-married couple.
The celebrations including music, song, and dance performed by close friends and family.
